Spring is just around the corner. We may be dreaming of lush greenscapes, bright blooms, and birds chirping on windowsills, but before we enjoy the fruitful landscapes of spring, we have to make it through the winter. February Landscaping Tasks
Walk through your landscape, taking note of any bare spots, drainage issues, or areas that need a refresh. February is an excellent time to redesign the landscape or create a custom outdoor living space. - Clean out bird houses and repair bird baths.
- Test your soil so you know what type of fertilizer to use this spring.
- Spray pre-emergent herbicides late in the month. Make sure all bermudagrass is dormant, since spraying herbicides on sprouts can be dangerous.
- Prune fruit trees like apple and pear. Delay pruning peach trees until March.
- Prune overgrown Burford holly bushes.
- Rotate houseplants every week to give them full sun exposure for more even growth.
- Plant sweet pea for a fragrant spring.
- Start a spring veggie garden. Plant English peas, onions, elephant garlic, or asparagus. You can also build a raised bed for spring planting.
- Fertilize fescue. You’ll need to reapply fertilizer in April.
March To-Do List
- Spread lime if it’s been more than a year since your last application.
- Plant tomato and annual flower seeds indoors. They should be ready to transplant in about 6 weeks.
- Plant bare-root roses in well-tilled soil with plenty of nutrients.
- Add beets, radish, turnips, and mustard to your spring veggie garden.
- Prune holly shrubs.
- Prune rose bushes, if you haven’t already.
- Remove spent camellia blooms.
- Repot indoor plants showing rapid growth.
- Sharpen your mower blade, adjust your mower height, and tune up your landscaping equipment.
