3 Ways to Prepare Your Lawn for Spring

3 Ways to Prepare Your Lawn for Spring

January 19, 2017 by gmg

Before you know it, spring will be here. There’s a good chance you may take a look at your lawn in Winder, GA and be overwhelmed by what you see. Here are some winter lawn maintenance tips that you can do now that will help keep your lawn healthier and reduce the amount of work you will need to do this spring.

Inspect Your Lawn Frequently

gardening toolsIt’s a good idea to take a walk around your yard, especially after a storm to look for accumulation of leaves, fallen branches and any debris that may have been blown in. You will want to remove these items from your lawn to prevent damage to the grass. Mold and fungus can begin to grow from the moisture that can be trapped in these items and damage your lawn.

Assess what areas of your lawn might need renovation during the spring with reseeding. Look for moss or mushroom growth that are a sign that your lawn may need specific lawn care services to resolve these issues.

Get Out and Rake Occasionally

The cooler weather makes it a good time to rake areas of your lawn where thatch may be present. Thatch is a layer of dried, dead grass that can stop fertilizer, sunlight and oxygen from reaching the roots of healthy grass. Removing the thatch will help your lawn come back healthy in the spring.

Weed Prevention

During the cooler weather, most weeds are dormant. Once the temperature reaches 55 degrees, some weeds like crabgrass will begin to grow. To prevent crabgrass in your lawn, you need to put down a crabgrass preventer before spring for pre-emergent crabgrass control. A good way to tell that it’s time to apply pre-emergents is to watch for blooming forsythia.
